Imagining An Augmented Reality Future

Augmented (hyper)Reality: Domestic Robocop from Keiichi Matsuda on Vimeo.

The latter half of the 20th century saw the built environment merged with media space, and architecture taking on new roles related to branding, image and consumerism. Augmented reality may recontextualise the functions of consumerism and architecture, and change in the way in which society operate within it. This is a film produced by Keiichi Matsuda's in his final year of his Masters in Architecture program, which is part of a larger project about the social and architectural consequences of new media and augmented reality.

Although the context of the video here is what Robocop would be experiencing, it is not a far stretch to say that when AR glasses become as common as mobile phones this is potentially something that will become an everyday occurrence for us as it is for us to see billboard signs as we drive to work on our daily commute. Of course, this video is an extreme rendition of that, we would certainly expect filters like we do today for spam filters and website pop-up blockers. While these are all valid concerns, it will still certainly enhance our future and make our lives easier as information becomes even more readily accessible than it already is.

The world's first ever Immersive Technology Summit will be held at the Los Angeles Center Studios (LACS) on October 21st, 2010.
