What are haptic devices? Haptics is commonly referred to as the ability to interact with a virtual environment through physical contact, such as receiving sensations associated with what is going on in the virtual world through touch. There are two types of feedback. Tactile and kinesthetic. The first major breakthrough in Haptics technology came in 1993 when MIT’s AI laboratory created a device that made it possible for a person to feel a virtual object.
Since then Haptics technology has been making their appearance in everyday products such as smart phones that vibrate when touched. Haptic devices are even being merged with other fields of immersive technology. Researchers at the University of Tokyo have managed to combine Haptics with augmented reality with the creation of a hologram that can be paired with a tactile feedback system to give the user a physical feeling of the holographic object What’s more amazing is that it requires no special equipment, just your bare hands. So we've all seen examples of Augmented Reality (AR). Most of the AR we've seen so far has an AR marker that triggers an overlay of digital information on top of the physical world. This is great if you're just looking for additional information or learning more interesting, but what about entertainment and playing with the digital information?
This Augmented Reality demo was made by Frontier Vision and the Irrlicht engine on a Windows Vista based PC. This clip shows how to "touch" with a hand the 3D model. It's rather entertaining watching the hand trip this mininarature character standing on top of the marker on top of this card. In fact it almost looks like a card from a trading card game. Imagine playing "Magic: The Gathering" card game with this technology, it would be so entertaining! For kids you could literally give them a new toy to play with by simply printing out another card!

If there was ever any doubt whether manipulating our visual senses would be enough to trick our bodies into responding then this video is a must see, not to mention it is quite funny seeing a full grown man flailing his arms around to keep his balance even though he is physically standing on solid ground and isn't even moving! Imagine adding in sound, tactile feedback, etc...
IDEO labs has created a simple, featherweight headset, a 10' x 10' x 10' white room, and $600,000 worth of projector and computer equipment, combined with the smarts of the folks at Eon Reality, results in one insanely real experience for this user. Can you imagine playing a game of Quake or Call of Duty with this setup? I think we can all agree that the future is going to be awesome! So the question now is... when can I get one?

What is Virtual Reality (VR)? The Meddling Geniuses at ImmersiveTech break it down and explain it in plain simple English. There is more virutal reality around than you think. Granted we still have quite a way to go but every journey begins with a first step.
Virtual reality is a term that applies to computer-simulated environments that simulate places in the real world as well as imaginary ones. It takes your ~current~ reality and ~replaces~ it with a virtual one. The first widely accepted ~digital~ virtual reality was created by the US Air Force in 1966 as part of their flight simulation training, however traces of attempts to ~replace~ reality predating digital computing can be found as far back as the 1860's when 360 art through panoramic murals began to appear.

Inition 3D has developed filming equipment that films in 3D live. Two different lenses on the same camera film at the same time. A few England rugby players explore its possibilities. Filming in 3D live will change the way sports fans experience games, events, and competitions. Viewers will be immersed into the opening ceremonies of major sports events using the special filming equipment.
Stadiums would definitely be in a pickle. But this is an amazing development to be able to feel like you're IN the game. The definition of "watching" and "being at places" would change so much. What would happen to stadiums and other places that depend on live viewing of events?
