A Memoriam of Steve Jobs and Our (Im)Take

By Tim Wut On October 8, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock (and assuming your rock doesn’t have WiFi access) just knows. The news of Steve Job’s passing has exploded across the internet with tribute videos, old video viewings, and news blasts in the form of tweets, posts, and updates at an all time high. With one of the most poignant and impactful memorials ever created for… ANYONE on Apple’s homepage, the news hit the tech and consumer world with an impact that exceeded that of The King of Pop’s recent passing. But not to embark on an Apples to oranges argument, the influence of Apple Computers has had, in the tech consumer world, been undeniably profound with Steve Jobs at the forefront.

Housing Purchase Made Easy With 3D Condo Explorer

By CaseyG On July 20, 2011 · 2 Comments

The folks at 3D Condo Explorer Inc. have come out with a new product that allows potential buyers to view a 3D representation of an apartment, home, or condo before it has even been built. The software is not just a visualization tool but also can be used to customize the apartment prior to sale. [...]

Autoglass envisions windshields of the future

By Albert C. Lai On June 3, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Projecting a head-up display onto your windshield is so passé; Autoglass reckons the future of digital driving is having augmented reality baked into the glass itself. The company has thrown together a video demo of what it believes the windshield of your car will be like in 2020, throwing in intelligent location-based services that can hunt down gas stations, flag up cyclists and pedestrians angling to get run over, and warn you when there’s a speed camera nearby. [...]

Sony’s SmartAR – A new kind of Augmented Reality

By Albert C. Lai On May 30, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Sony introduced “SmartAR”, a so-called integrated Augmented Reality technology that looked pretty decent in the demo video uploaded that day. The company produced a new video over the weekend, and if you’re into Augmented Reality, the new footage will blow you away. [...]

Microsoft’s Kinect Brings Augmented Reality to the Fitting Room

By Albert C. Lai On May 27, 2011 · Leave a Comment

While the 3D models here are far from perfect, it is certainly an interesting idea. It would be interesting to see if this speeds up or lengthens decision making time. In an era where large screen TVs are starting to become a commonality in homes maybe shoppers will one day be able to simply shop at home while the rest of us aren’t left standing around holding someone else’s bag. Take note at about 1:45 minutes into the video that we have a gentleman trying on outfits that are clearly not his size. I suppose we all need to entertain ourselves when we’re not really the one shopping! [...]

Augmented Reality Event (ARE) 2011 Recap

By Nathan Makino On May 20, 2011 · Leave a Comment

Silicon Valley was abuzz this week (though isn’t it always?). More specifically, with a current ‘buzz’ industry: Augmented Reality. For those unfamiliar, augmented reality (AR) refers to the use of graphical or informational overlays onto the real world to provide a mixed reality experience. Science fiction stuff right? Not really; prominent and largely used applications like Yelp! monocle or Google Goggles allow you to take pictures of restaurants/objects and give you more in-depth information on the subject. With the aid of visual cues or prominent AR markers, these apps can spawn 3D objects from flat surfaces to be made viewable on phones and mobile devices.
