Augmented Reality Zombies on the Tegra

AELatGT asked:

Here's a quick peek of a game under development at the GVU Center's Augmented Environments Lab at Georgia Tech, in collaboration with SCAD-Atlanta.

i’m guessing there are certain requirements for the physical gameboard. with that said, would i be able to draw and print out a map and play on it? also, if i stuck my hand in to poke a zombie, would the system be able to recognize my hand ‘attacking’ the zombie?

Nope. It’s a dev kit for the new NVidia mobile chipset. Will probably be in mobile devices of various sorts (including phones) this year.

Now that actually sounds really cool :-) But I’d prefer it for the XBOX 360 ;-)

Cause IT IS Augmented Reality, it requieres the paper with the data to emulate the 3d envioremnt or character.. DUMB ASS.

While it’s not completely obvious from the video, one of the key points of handheld AR is the direct control you have of the camera. Since you can move it around “naturally”, you get then focus your mental and physical effort on control other aspects of the game.

Only part of what you see is “virtual” — you are still seeing the physical gameboard, which gives you a kind of “grounding” in the world that makes it easy to think and play in the larger world (not just on the small screen).

gonna be very very cool, if it gets implemented in the next generation iphone. Supposedly the hardware is going to be in it.
Camera with video support,
Compass, which knows its position in 360 degrees, up down side ways etc…(sure there not just called a compass).
Plus it has GPS, so in theory you could get games implemented like those shown on the gadget show in the UK.

This is the beginning of proper virtual reality games, where say you might wear a headset, and your walking in real life would move you in the game. That’s just one possibility, but what this could lead to would turn the Playstation 3 into a relic.

Okay call me a bit lazy but I just don’t get it.

I mean I see how it is being used and it does look interesting, but WHY would I would to point a device at something on my table to then see stuff happening on the device?!?

Why not play the game inside the device 100% ?! What is the use of playboard on the table and the combination of both?!

i am assuming he doesn’t realise it’s the cutting edge for portable technology. i remember seeing over videos of tegra doing 3d, and it was awesome.

i am so so surprised that portable tech can do this, i would have expected something like for another 3 or so years. how far is it off release? i haven’t even seen tegra hardware advertised for sale. but i am liking the look of the new ion platform though.

Wow, amazing. Thumbs up for that game and the new technology of Nvidia Tegra.

One greeting.

Higher capabilities? How so? What are you thinking about?

It’s CPU is good, but still only an ARM. In this demo, each of the Zombies and People are fully animated models with hundreds of polygons, with GPU-based skinning, etc.

Keep in mind that we’re just doing simple, straight OpenGL, with not a ton of optimizations, and it’s running at higher frame rates. Also, this is a tech demo, on a pre-release, so things like the Camera drivers are likely not optimized, etc.

good job, but dosn’t the tegra have higher capabilities?
