acrossair asked: acrossair, the makers of the TVGuide.co.uk iPhone app bring you Nearest Tube one of the first augmented reality apps to go live in the iPhone AppStore. Forget boring 2D tube maps! Try this amazing new application that tells Londoners where their nearest tube station is via their iPhones video function. When you load the app, holding it flat, all 13 lines of the London underground are displayed in coloured arrows. By tilting the phone upwards, you will see the nearest stations: what direction ...

Which phone or OS it can or can’t run on isn’t really relevant… I think the more pressing issue is the fact that anyone wandering around London (or any other large city) holding an expensive smartphone up in tront of them is pretty much asking to be mugged.

Bet it doesn’t work Underground through! It’d also be nice to know which passage to go down when you are trying to change trains too.

Not as good as the Nivida one. It have 3D models inserted into the scene instead of just labels.

“because the HTC Magic isn’t a fully phone, it has a crippled OS”
That’s a misleading statement. The crippling of the OS is dependent on provider and location/country. AT&T is crippling the IPhone by not allowing for tethering, for example. I don’t deny that the 3GS is extremely powerful, but it has its own faults, mostly in Apple’s restrictive (and bizarre at times) development policies.

I would really like to see how they have gained access to the low level camera functions without calling undocumented functions or using the platform headers… Interesting to see if this actually makes it to the app store.
Bloody restrictive platform.

Not exactly. Virtual augmentation differs much on the iPhone for two reasons: One, because the “HTC Magic” isn’t a fully phone, it has a crippled OS, and that means the possibilities with VA are quite limited on the Magic. For example, I don’ think the Magic would have games and software with these features that would run as fast as the 3GS, and that’s because of the 400MG RAM on the iPhone. See my point? OH, and last thing, you only find about one video about AV on the Magic, cus it’s crippled

This is already done in Android (HTC Magic)

This isn’t fake, the iPhone is probably the only phone capable of this, but you’re right, Apple needs to change their agreement in order for this to get in hands of the public.

It is on the acrossair website and for sale on the apps store. It uses GPS, digital compass chip and the accelerometer and the Video to overlay the locations. Very clever using all the technology possible. Probably one of the smartest apps out there and more will follow like this.
